Kuta, Bali

So I was maybe expecting Bali to be a bit different to the rest of my route. There are less hostels and more shared guesthouses, so I braced myself for few days of ‘me’ time, to think, chill, read, scowl at honeymooners etc. However, this travelling lark  just keeps getting better. I land in Denpasar at 11am, and by 11pm I am out on the town with huge group of French guys and couple of German girls. They try to educate me on Daft Punk. I them on Girls Aloud.  The guys are friends of my new roommate who I meet in a taxi from the airport. They turn out not to be a serial killer. It’s one of the first things I ask.

In my two full days here, I manage a grand total of 2h sleep. This place is partyville. Our favorite haunt is Sky Garden (bit of a Kuta hotspot.) As you stand on the roof terrace,  you can’t help looking over only yards away to the memorial for the 2002/5 bombings built on the bombsite on which we stand.  Looking at all of the names of the lost engraved there, from so many nationalities, I think we can’t all help being a bit moved by the fact that such young people, on a night out exactly like this one, lost their lives. Everyone and their dog seemed to have polarised thoughts on Kuta. It’s trashy and loud, and the travel snobs love to hate it. I loved it, Team Kuta all the way.

An.an.tas.in : The Anantasin is the name of a shipwreck just of the coast of the Sensi Parasise, Mae Haad Bay, Koh Tao, Thailand. It’s one of my many favorite places.
