Pai, Northern Thailand

021A recent Tai film; ‘Pai in Love’ was shot here, boosting tourism tenfold, although ‘in love with Pai’ might be more appropriate. It’s easy to heart it here. It’s a cute, misty, mountain town that feels like being inside a Kath Kidston store; all pastels and kitsch. It’s near to the famed Golden Triangle & the three-way border of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

Given, its home to the tie-dye-dreadlock-hippy brigade, but late 20’s/mid 30’s ones that are loaded and have all set up craft boutiques and organic cafes. We need not scour the land for balsamic vinegar and pesto here; it’s more common than actual Thai food.

Talking of love, mine here was of the ‘Tough Love’ variety. The first in the form of a tattoo. Lindsey and I really wanted to get traditional Bamboo style ones, so a Long Island Iced tea for dutch courage and we went for it.

The second form of pain was training to be a Muay Tai fighter at a local boxing camp. Muay Thai is like kickboxing meets WWF wrestling, but even more hard-core! Kaarina, (from Bangkok/Koh Phi Phi in Oct) and I, got the Rocky Balboa treatment from some brilliant but scary Thai sargent major trainers. There was skipping, there were punch bags, there were wrist guards and boxing gloves. What’s more there was (no exaggeration) perhaps a hundred pulse sit ups and a Thai man whipping us with a stick, which I didn’t appreciate! Learning the art of left hooks, elbow jabs and kicks to the head was definitely more difficult than it looks. Some of the guys there are all doing 3 to 6 month courses. I’m not sure I could hack the pace.

An.an.tas.in : The Anantasin is the name of a shipwreck just of the coast of the Sensi Parasise, Mae Haad Bay, Koh Tao, Thailand. It’s one of my many favorite places.

Lit.tle: Just because it’s cute.
